Discover gems along the way like the Trachten Museum, Railway Museum, and Westerburg Adventure Station. Admire the over 100-year-old Rennerod Station and charming details like the cast-iron fountain in Waldmühlen or the chapel in Eisen, worth a short pause.

Conquer the Knot (between Oberrod and Arborn), with over 600 meters, one of the highest elevations in the High Westerwald and a climatic divide between the High Westerwald and Hessischer Westerwald. Explore picturesque villages, numerous rest stops, and of course, the wonderful nature.

Directions

Start your tour at Westerburg's train station. The city offers diverse shopping options.

Follow forest paths to the southernmost point of the first lake, Wiesensee. A café at Winner Ufer invites you to rest with a splendid view. The WällerLand Tourist Information offers informational material and treats to browse. Cycle along the lake to the village of Pottum, situated directly by the lake.

Then pedal for a longer time past small woods and meadows until the second lake follows: Secker Pond with a camping site. Pass by Haus Waldesruh and continue to the towns of Seck and Waldmühlen.

Along B54, the route leads to Rennerod's Tourist Information and through the town of the same name. Cycle on to Krombachtalsperre, the third lake.

Via Mademühlen, ascend to the "Knot" and pass through Mengerskirchen. The fourth lake, Seeweiher of Mengerskirchen, follows immediately after. Through Neunkirchen and Irmtraut, you'll reach the Elbbach valley, pass through Langendernbach, and the Wilsenroth station.

From the Hessian village of Dorndorf, pass through Bilkheim to Wallmerod's train station. Here, a former tranquil rail trail begins. Through Berod and a longer stretch of woodland, the Eisenbachwiesen nature reserve, you'll cycle past fields and see the Meudt clay pit on the left. Passing through the towns of Meudt and Eisen, a woodland area on the right, you'll reach Ehringhausen.

Then cross B8 and cycle through the village of Hahn am See. Here, the fifth and final lake of the tour awaits: Hahner Forest Lake, offering refreshments and a camping site. Subsequently, you'll arrive in Elbingen and turn left again onto the rail trail. Now cycle seven relaxed kilometers until you reach Westerburg's train station.

Safety instructions

Very good condition required.

Equipment

For bags and backpacks, not only the back offers space on a bike tour - the weight of the equipment should be distributed over several parts of the body and bike. Wind, rain or sun can lead to very different temperature sensations on the bike - a cold can best be avoided with professional cycling clothing. On a multi-day tour, you should always have a change of clothes on hand to be prepared for any eventuality. In addition to other important pieces of equipment, the necessary tools and repair utensils should not be forgotten. At high speeds, it's easy to take a wrong turn on a bike tour: traditional and modern aids such as a bike map or a GPS device are used for orientation. You should always have a small emergency kit with you.

Tips

Cover the approximately 80-kilometer route in a day. Allow enough time for detours, e.g., heading north to Fuchskaute.
