Description

Castle routes 1 - 3 lead you on the most beautiful paths around the Reichenstein castle ruins in Puderbach. Various activities are offered along the edges of the trails, waiting for your exploration.

All three castle routes pass this castle dating from the 14th century. Tours can be booked at the Tourist Information in Puderbach (02684-858160). Visit one of the recurring events in the Puderbacher Land during your hike. Whether a castle festival, a concert in the shadow of the castle, or the Steimeler Potato Market - these crowd-pullers lie directly on the castle route. We are happy to inform you about upcoming events (www.puderbacher-land.de).

Further highlights along the castle routes are the art exhibition in the rooms of the Bruchhäuser Foundation in Steimel, the nature adventure trail and the football golf facility in Daufenbach (route 2), the pond area in Linkenbach, as well as parts of the Grenzbach valley (route 3).

Approach

The Puderbach collective municipality is located in the northeast of the Neuwied district, directly in the heart of the Westerwald in Rhineland-Palatinate. Via the A3, the ICE stations Montabaur and Siegburg/Bonn can be reached in a short time.

You reach the Puderbacher Land if you take exit 36 - Neuwied on the A3 motorway and follow the signs for "Puderbach."

Parking

We recommend Puderbach as the starting point, as all three trails converge here. Our route descriptions always start from the parking lot at the Schulbrücke on Barentoner Straße in Puderbach. Since the routes are signposted in opposite directions, the path can of course also be taken the other way around.

Directions

From the starting point, the three castle routes (1+2+3) still run together. The castle route leads uphill from here towards Steimel. Upon arrival in Steimel, the path passes the "Haus Neitzert," where artworks by Karl Bruchhäuser can be viewed (www.bruchhaeser-stiftung.de). It then continues through the market square, where the regionally renowned Steimeler Potato Market takes place in autumn. From there, the path continues through the forest towards Reichenstein. The trail runs directly past the Reichenstein castle ruins. The ruins can be visited by prior arrangement (www.burgruine-reichenstein.de). Castle routes 2+3 lead uphill in Reichenstein towards the district road between Dürrholz and Döttelsfeld. After crossing the district road, it goes down into the idyllic Werlenbach valley. Here the two routes separate. Castle route 3 leads from the Werlenbach valley directly into the renaturalized Grenzbach valley. Besides wonderful scenery, far from vehicle traffic, you can observe Heck cattle grazing here. The path gently ascends to Linkenbach. After a short steeper climb, you can enjoy great panoramic views over the region again on the open field. After another section through the forest, you can enjoy further distant views before encountering castle route 2, which then leads back together towards the starting point in Puderbach. Castle route 3 is approximately 20.5 km long.

Safety instructions

  • Wear sturdy footwear as well as weather-appropriate, functional clothing that protects you from cold and wetness or heat and sun.
  • Bring enough fluids. There are not hospitality options everywhere.
  • Please wear appropriate hiking boots that provide sufficient support even on slippery and steep or rocky and uneven paths.
  • If you think certain sections of the path are not walkable for you, you should avoid them. Especially in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can have muddy and slippery passages.
  • In autumn, particular attention should be paid to the fact that fallen leaves on the ground can cover unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. You must expect such path impairments when hiking.
  • Although the path is very well marked throughout, you should always carry a suitable hiking map for safety reasons.

Equipment

Hiking boots and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended.
