Hartenfels

Castle ruin Hartenfels

Detailed description

Formerly to protect the historic trade route from Cologne to Frankfurt, an observation tower was built in Hartenfels in the 13th century. Because of the similarity of the 28m high keep with a cream pot it is called "Schmanddippe" in Westerwald dialect. In the immediate vicinity there is a basalt formation, the so-called "Zehntgarben", which according to legend is a wagon with grain offerings.
