A new generation of forest is gradually developing on the heights around the Marienthaler Bachtal valley, which were once dominated by spruce forests. Your tour begins at the parking lot in front of the former Marienthal monastery. From here, a winding path leads you uphill to the Way of the Cross on the Calvary above the monastery. On the way, you have a beautiful view of the monastery and the village of Marienthal. The route continues along well-maintained paths and smaller trails through the tranquillity of the former spa forest of the Archbishopric of Cologne. The babbling of the Marienthal stream accompanies you in some sections. A moderate descent into the Lohmühlbach valley follows a march characterized by sparse forest regeneration areas. Here the Klosterdorfweg meets the WesterwaldSteig. You return to the starting point via the asphalted Lohmühlenweg trail on gentle terrain. In the monastery village of Marienthal with its pilgrimage church and former Franciscan monastery, various restaurants offer the opportunity to enjoy regional dishes with a twist. The monastery is also home to a branch of the Hamm (Sieg) registry office.
In the winter months, the quality of the trail may be impaired due to logging work on individual sections of the trail. If you feel that certain sections of the trail are not suitable for you, you should avoid them. In adverse weather conditions, natural trails can become muddy and slippery. In autumn in particular, you should be aware that leaves lying on the ground can cover bumps, roots, stones or holes in the trail. You must expect this type of impairment to the trail when you go hiking. Although the trail is very well marked throughout, you should always have a suitable hiking map with you for safety reasons.
Sturdy shoes and clothing suitable for the weather
Every year on Ascension Day, numerous pilgrims make the pilgrimage from Marienstatt to Marienthal in a large procession along the Marienwanderweg.
