Detailed description

The upper floors of the picturesque building ensemble of the "Collegium" of the Hohe Schule house the municipal museum with approx. 700 m² of exhibition space. The reformed academy in Herborn existed from 1584 to 1817. "For a time, Herborn was internationally more important than all the universities of the empire." This sentence, which causes astonishment in some places, does not come from Herborn and not from a specialist for the Hohe Schule, but from an expert with an overall view, Joachim Whaley from the English elite university of Cambridge. He refers to the heyday of the Hohe Schule Herborn from 1584 onwards. At the end of this heyday, Johann Heinrich Alsted's great Herborn Encyclopaedia was published in 1630, already in the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War, and attracted attention around the globe. On display is a collection of Herborn's history that is well worth seeing: the development of the High School with its institutions and scholars (including other illustrious names such as Johann Piscator, Caspar Olevian, Johann Althusius), pre- and early history in the Dill region, the effects of the air war in the Dill region, historical blank weapons, bourgeois domestic culture of the 18th and 19th centuries, local pottery products as well as pre-industrial textile technology such as hosiery weaving, blue printing and linen weaving. In the foyer of the museum there are changing special exhibitions on various themes. Highlights in the permanent exhibition include the skeleton of the oldest "Herborner" (approx. 2,300 years old), two Herborn pharmacies from the 19th century and the tabletop planetarium (approx. 1780), which was intended to illustrate the universe with constellations to students.
