Description

I start from the car park at the Outdoor Centre Lahntal, pass through the viaduct of the former Ulmtal railway (now Ulmtal cycle path) and reach a very beautiful forest area. It is quiet around me and I can relax and recharge here. The route leads uphill at times, but the effort is worth it: At the highest point I have an unobstructed view of the abandoned village Schönhausen. This village was once a victim of the plague. My path takes me past fields and meadows and I first circle the Siegfried Fietz sculpture park. I also pass the solar park and a lovely orchard meadow. Then I stand in front of the park's main entrance, which unites numerous sculptures under beautiful old trees. The further path leads me back to the Outdoor Centre Lahntal with playground and many animals via the track of the former Ulmtal railway.

Directions

I begin my route at the car park of the Outdoor Centre Lahntal, directly on the state road L3324. In theory, I could also have stayed here in one of the Indian tipis – with built-in wooden beds and its own fireplace – or even in a hobbit house. Coming from the car park, I immediately turn left, go through a small underpass and first follow the bend of the path to the right, then turn left into a forest area. At the next two forks, I keep right and walk leisurely uphill. The path bends to the right and from above I look into a bright enchanted forest. After about 500 meters I reach a crossroads, turn left, and walk about 200 meters uphill. Then I turn right twice and trees, bushes, fallen mossy tree trunks, mushrooms, ferns and flowers line my path for 700 meters.

With another right turn I leave the forest area and look over the valley. Half the route is almost done, so I decide to rest on a bench and study the board explaining the historical significance of the village Schönhausen, whose last residents fled the plague in 1450. My path continues downhill past meadows and pastures, and after about 800 meters I see the first figures of the Siegfried Fietz sculpture park on the right. At the upper entrance I could continue the route through the park. But I decide to walk around the park and stroll about 100 meters further to a rest area with two benches at a crossroads. After a short stop I turn right and walk along the solar park, which produces solar energy on a 22,000 square meter site.

After about 100 meters I reach the Ulmtal cycle path on the right – the former route of the Ulmtal railway, which has been converted into a cycle/walking path – and stand in front of the main entrance to the Siegfried Fietz sculpture park. The composer, performer and producer, who lives in Allendorf, initiated the park. I admire sculptures made from local materials such as wood, basalt and metal and retrieve explanations by the artists via mobile phone and QR code. After a thorough round, I walk the remaining approximately 1.2 kilometers along the Ulmtal cycle path. At a rest area, a board informs me about ore mining in the area. Shortly before the car park, I have the option to stop at the Outdoor Centre with restaurant, beer garden, playground and many animals.
