Hachenburg

Old Market Hachenburg

Brief description

Historic city centre - In the heart of the Lion City

Detailed description

Between the reddish-brown half-timbered facades, below the majestically enthroned baroque castle, the Old Market radiates harmonious tranquillity over the surrounding town of Hachenburg. Originally the commercial centre of regional agriculture and livestock farming, today it forms the flourishing historic town centre. After 700 years of development, grain stalls and cattle dealers have been replaced by cosy cafés and inviting bars, giving the old market the charm of an idyllic residential town.

Medieval charm
Surrounded by colourful half-timbered houses, basalt and slate, the listed town centre is adorned by the historic castle church and the baroque Franciscan church. As the town's landmark, the two-tailed golden lion watches over life on the old market square. This results in the princely splendour of the market, which is characteristic of the title of cultural metropolis of the Westerwald. But hidden amidst the impressive architecture are little secrets around the old market square. The free-swinging clock is unique in the world and is hidden behind one of the numerous windows, a dreamy reading garden slumbers between winding alleyways and the town centre surprises with its diverse history in the form of aesthetic monuments.

Packed with culture & culinary delights
In December, the Old Market is more like a winter fairy tale than a city centre. Snowflakes fall on the roofs of the Christmas market amidst brilliant lighting. The market fountain is surrounded by tranquil market stalls that invite you to savour Westerwald delicacies. But as soon as the snowflakes have been replaced by sunshine, the cultural summer begins on the Old Market Square. During the warm summer months, the Alter Markt is home to cultural events, open-air concerts or a meal under the warm hospitality of the Westerwald locals. The Alter Markt is a modern hotspot with an antique façade, sometimes with creative festivals, sometimes with cabaret, but always with heart and zeitgeist. Once the venue for the mayor's announcements, today it brings together international and regional artists who fill Hachenburg's town centre with life. Between art and culture, Hachenburg's town centre becomes a meeting place for locals, tourists and visitors alike. For socialising in one of Hachenburg's restaurants or cafés, there is always a peaceful atmosphere on the Old Market Square. Once you hear the heart of the town beating, you will never let go of its charisma.
