On an exciting journey of discovery of medieval mining
The historic Assberg roofing slate mine is one of the largest, oldest and publicly accessible slate mines in the Westerwald. The open-cast mine is around 240 metres long and around 70 metres wide and is popularly known as the "Schiwakoul". The slate from the slate mine was not only used to cover the roof of Hachenburg's Barrock Castle, but also that of Marienstatt Monastery. The mine, which is easily accessible by stairs 20 metres underground, has fantastic acoustics and is an ideal place for extraordinary meditation due to its special atmosphere and silence. The mine is part of the Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus Geopark and thus belongs to a network of regional players in the field of education for sustainable development. The mine can be reached by following the WesterwaldSteig and Druidensteig trails. It is accessible free of charge at all times. The Limbach Cultural and Tourist Association also offers 45-minute group tours by appointment. It is also possible to hike the mine from nearby Limbach via four different LIMBACHER RUNDEN. From Limbach, access by car is possible via the end of the village in the direction of Astert.
