‘All beginnings are difficult’ ... you might think if you have never written a violin concerto or a symphony before. Richard Strauss was just 17 years old when he set about writing his first major solo concerto. He carefully orientated himself on the classical model of the three movements, some of which he wrote in his exercise book during maths lessons. The press soon praised the ‘brilliant and very effective treatment of the solo instrument’.
Johannes Brahms, on the other hand, had such great respect for the first symphony, as he felt Beethoven's breath on his neck, that he only began it at the age of 29 and only had it premièred 14 years later. What both works have in common, however, is that they were immediately greeted very favourably by the public. And fortunately, both later masters of their craft dared to put their wonderful musical thoughts on paper.
