Höhr-Grenzhausen

Stelenrundwege

Detailed description

The circular trail starts at the Westerwald Ceramics Museum (Lindenstr. 13) and is just over two kilometres long. There is almost always a line of sight between at least two steles along the way, which are all the same height but appear different. The works of the ceramic workshops are varied, and no specific theme was specified. The (art) works are therefore extremely varied. High and low, from classic jugs to the extravagant. A plaque indicates the origin of the work. A historical stele was also erected on today's Merkelbachhof, which refers to the Mer-kelbach manufactory that used to be located there. This means that 29 wooden steles were erected in Grenzhausen in 2018. The project was continued in the Höhr district in 2020. There are now a further 23 wooden steles there. In addition to the material clay, objects made of wood, glass or stone were also "staged" here.

In contrast to the Grenzhausen district, there is not just one circular route in Höhr. Instead, the properties are spread throughout the entire district. Nevertheless, two Nevertheless, two suggested tours give visitors the opportunity to view all the steles on one walk. The first tour starts at the Stadtpark and is approx. 2.5 km long. The second suggested tour starts at the Flürchen hiking car park and is approx. 3 km long. Although there are currently "only" 5 steles here, you "hike" partly along a path with a wonderful view and also pass two ceramic workshops. Two historical replicas of works from former ceramic workshops have also been placed in the Höhr district. The first is the former Marzi & Remy ceramics factory (now a technology and start-up centre for ceramic materials) and Dümler & Breiden. A senior citizens' centre is located there today. Both objects were modelled by the Konscholke modelling workshop from Höhr-Grenzhausen.

Brief description

Höhr-Grenzhausen has been trying to make ceramics visible in the townscape for many years. For example, the gallery of vessels was created at the entrance to the town coming from the motorway. In 2017, the idea of steles with ceramic objects was finalised. Local ceramic workshops were to display the wide range of their work on wooden steles, each 2.25 metres high. To this end, 28 ceramists came together and a circular route was created along the steles in the Grenzhausen district.
