The varied W1 combines the Wiedweg and WesterwaldSteig trails with marvellous views and beautiful forest paths. It leads us along Walburg Castle, built by the manufacturer Rosbach according to the model and with original parts of Waldniel Castle (not open to the public as it is owned by the company). Along the lovely River Wied, it is worth taking a short detour to the Franciscan Chapel of the Cross, built in 1694.

From the car park, follow the WesterwaldSteig/W1 access path straight ahead to the Wied and then turn right for 300 metres. Here we turn left over the pedestrian bridge to the Nassen's Mühle restaurant and the Hotel Breitbacher Hof. We follow the path to the right along the Wied until we reach the main road. Now we walk a short distance to the left uphill towards Over until we turn off into the forest on the opposite side. We walk on the W1 through the forest and back down to the Wied. Before the bridge, we turn left and follow the Wiedweg/W1 towards Roßbach. We pass two mountain huts, cross the Wallbach and follow the gentle ascent to the left until we turn left again back towards Waldbreitbach. Here we climb up the hill past Walburg Castle and continue along the WesterwaldSteig / W1 with beautiful views. We pass another refuge and come back down the forest path (start of the hike). On the other side of the road, we walk along a small forest path until we turn left onto the bridge and cross the Wied. Here it is worth making a detour to the Kreuzkapelle chapel (visible on the right). After the bridge, the path on the W1 leads us left along the Wied back to the car park.

In the 19th century, it served as a temporary home for the founders of the Franciscan order and the foundress of the Franciscan nuns. Owned by the Hausen Franciscan friars since 1925.
