Twenty-five million years ago, a volcanic eruption covered a maar lake with scorching-hot lava. This solidified into basalt, preserving the lake's habitat. The volcanic rock is ideal as a building material, especially for road and railway construction. Industrial mining began in the 20th century. The basalt is still exported to numerous European countries today. As a result of the mining, some of the Tertiary lake deposits are once again exposed, making the Stöffel an important fossil site. The Stöffel Route follows the trail of basalt. The Stöffel Park, the TERTIÄRUM, the GeoBlick Stöffel Tower, and the Erbach Railway Bridge are the highlights. Numerous GeoStations trace the path from the volcanic formation of basalt to the high-quality gravel used in road construction. Basti Basalt can tell children about the world of quarries at many audio stations.
From the state road 281, the Stöffel Park is signposted with tourist information signs.
The Nistertal-Bad Marienberg train station can be reached from Au an der Sieg or Limburg, even on weekends. A signposted access road leads from here to the GeoRoute.
The hiking trail begins at the information box at the entrance to Stöffel Park. Those who would like to visit the museum in addition to the hike can purchase a day ticket here. The hike through the grounds is free of charge. The route first leads past the eagle owl enclosure to Stöffel Lake. Here, a GeoStation provides information about the excavation house and the excavations of the fossils, which can now be viewed in the TERTIÄRUM. Through the art garden, follow the markings back to Stöffel. The hiking trail now leads beneath the high conveyor belts into the forests surrounding Stöffel. From Büdungen, the moderate climb begins up to Stockum-Püschen. Here, four GeoStations of the Basalt Mile are located. The path of the basalt block to the gravel is explained using massive machine parts.Once you reach the top of the hill, the GeoView from the Stöffel Tower offers a sweeping view of the active quarry and the region. From here, the trail continues to Götzenberg. A small geostation at the summit cross explains the suspected eruption site of the Stöffel volcano. From the basalt summit, the trail descends into the Nister Valley. Shortly before the Hardter Mill, another geostation describes the basalt mining near Bad Marienberg. At the meeting point with the Westerwald Steig, another highlight awaits hikers. The 70-meter-high Erbach Railway Bridge is a symbol of the efforts made to transport raw materials in the Westerwald. At Nistertal, the hiking trail leads past the Nister Bridge and back to Büdingen. From here, the trail follows the same route back to Stöffel Park. At the end of the circular hike, Stöffel Park and the TERTIÄRUM invite you to visit.
The hiking trail is a discovery tour and has sections of paths.Entering the active quarry area is prohibited. Please do not climb over fences.
