Weihnachtsdorf Waldbreitbach

Description

The idyllic village of Waldbreitbach in the Wiedtal valley has been transformed into the Waldbreitbach Christmas Village for over 30 years. This is not a fenced-in market square or a village of huts, but the entire town itself is decorated with Christmas attractions and numerous nativity scenes.

From 29 November 2025 to 25 January 2026, it will be atmospheric when everything shines in golden splendour. The special thing about the Waldbreitbach Christmas Village is that all the attractions are spread out in the open air throughout the village. They all remain set up until the last Sunday in January, can be visited daily and admission is free.

To celebrate the opening, a torchlight procession through the village will take place on Friday, 28 November 2025 at 18:00, during which all the attractions will be illuminated for the first time this season. The Wiedklang Music Society will accompany the procession and will also play at the end at the Craft Museum, where mulled wine and Döppe cake will be served.

The large natural nativity scene in the Maria Himmelfahrt parish church can be set up in its regular place again this year. Other highlights include the ‘Star of Bethlehem’ - a walking trail with 3,500 light bulbs and over 30 nativity scenes, the floating nativity scene and floating Advent wreath on the River Wied, the life-size figures from the Erzgebirge on the church steps, the open-air nativity scene and the candle arch nativity scene. The Christmas illumination on the 18 m high guild tree with a diameter of 6 m and almost 10,000 LEDs provides a golden sparkle in the centre of the village.

A total of over 70 stations light up the ‘Nativity Scene Trail’, which runs a good 2 kilometres along the banks of the River Wied and through the village. This also includes lovingly designed small nativity scenes in shops and private gardens. Open guided tours take place on the following days from 3.00 pm to 4.30 pm for €4.00 per person: On 6/12/7/12, 13/12/14/12, 27/12/28/12/25 and 3/1/4/1/26 Group tours can be booked at any time.

On the 2nd and 3rd weekends of Advent (6/7 December and 13/14 December 2025), the Christmas village will also host a Christmas market. Music clubs and musicians from the region will perform on the stage during the Christmas market. The Christ Child also visits the market on all 4 days in the afternoon, hands out small presents to the children and is happy to have his photo taken with visitors.

From 8-12.12, 15-19.12 and 27.12.25-11.01.26, the Christmas village stall in Schmiddepark is open from 13:00 to 17:00. There you can enjoy mulled wine, hot chocolate with cream, lumumba and bockwurst in a roll.

In addition, this year on 6 and 7 December there will once again be the popular DIY bazaar in the Kolping House. There you can buy lovingly made gifts and warm up with coffee and homemade cake.

New this year: the big raffle with over 200 instant prizes totalling more than €5,000.00. Tickets are available in the village for just €1, half of which will be donated to the Pre-Tour of Hope.

The Christmas Village rally for children and young people up to the age of 18 will take place again this season. There are 10 questions to answer about the Christmas Village. If you hand in the completed quiz sheet at the Tourist Information Centre by 25 January, you will receive a little surprise! Have fun with it!

To round off a day trip to the Wiedtal, you can enjoy lunch or coffee and cake in one of the restaurants and cafés. Reservations are also highly recommended for small groups. The Wiedtal Tourist Association sends out free information material, and visitors can find souvenirs or Christmas gifts at the local tourist information centre.

The VfL Waldbreitbach organises the Christmas tree throwing on 25.1.26.

Finally, an update on energy consumption: All stations in the Waldbreitbach Christmas Village will be set up as usual. The lights will be switched on daily from 15:00 - 21:00. The lights will not be switched on in the morning. As everything has already been converted to LED in recent years, the total electricity consumption is only 3,000 KWh for the entire 8 weeks. This is comparable to what a family of 4 in a detached house consumes in a year and corresponds to electricity costs of around €1,000.
