Description

Wide paths for relaxation alternate with narrow paths for balancing. Many surprises are waiting at the wayside. Sometimes it is a rustic stream valley, sometimes a stately monastery with an exciting history, prehistoric excavations and stalactite caves or a cosy inn.

Brief description

The Westerwald-Steig is a trail with magnificent views. It spans 235 kilometres from Herborn to Rheinbrohl over mountains, romantic gorges and alpine climbing courses, alternating between wide paths for relaxing strolls to narrow paths to test your balance on. There is always something interesting to discover along this trail – a quaint river valley, an imposing abbey, prehistoric excavations and limestone caves or a cosy guesthouse – the variety is endless.

The Westerwald-Steig, a hiking trail in a class of its own, leads through the natural jewel of the Westerwald, along 235 interesting kilometres. The trail covers six different natural environments: the Hessian Westerwald, the High Westerwald/Wiesensee, the Altenkirchen Westerwald, the Kroppacher Schweiz, the Rhine-Westerwald nature park/Wied Valley and the Rhine-Westerwald nature park. All six offer pure nature and a wealth of natural, cultural and historical sights. Discover the region's history at the many castles, palaces and monasteries along the trail and explore lots of interesting historical town and village centres. The Westerwald-Steig trail brings you on a hike through lush green nature, with an endless variety of interesting experiences along the way. Hike, enjoy, relax – the Westerwald-Steig offers the possibility for all these things along every stage of the trail. Hiking through the trail's lush, green valleys up to the airy, wooded heights will relax you, both body and soul. The trail offers something for everyone – sport lovers, families, hikers in search of panoramic views or a just pleasant day's walking – on the Westerwald-Steig trail the journey is the destination.

Safety instructions

We will inform you about detours, road closures or other safety instructions on the WesterwaldSteig at the respective stage!

Wear sturdy shoes and appropriate clothing adapted to the weather, which will protect you from cold and wet or heat and sun.Take sufficient liquid with you. There are not refreshment facilities available everywhere.Please put on appropriate hiking boots, which will give you sufficient grip even on slippery and steep or rocky and uneven paths.If you feel that certain sections of the path are not accessible to you, you should avoid them. Particularly in adverse weather conditions, slushy and slippery passages can occur on near-natural paths.Especially in autumn, you should also be aware that the leaves lying on the ground can cover up unevenness, roots, stones or holes in the path. You must reckon with this kind of path obstruction when you go on a hike.Although the path is very well marked throughout, you should always have a suitable hiking map with you for safety reasons.
